The Race To Goodwood

On 12th September 2013 four friends, Aidan Lonergan, Jonathan Flood, John Cahalin and myself, will set off on a 1500km round journey from Dublin to the world famous, historic motor racing event, ‘The Goodwood Revival’ at the Goodwood Estate in Chichester, England.

This truly unique event is where 180,000 motoring enthusiasts from across the globe gather each year to celebrate three days of Classic and Vintage Motorsport as well as an impressive air show. One of the unique aspects of the event is that those who attend are expected to dress appropriately in 1940s – 1960s attire. This is something Aidan, Jonathan, John and myself plan to adhere to strictly from our time of departure to our return; whether it is vintage mechanic’s overalls or head-to-toe tweed. Our transportation for the journey will, of course, also be suitably of the period.

The trip will be undertaken in my own 1964 Mini and a 1979 British Leyland Mini Clubman track car owned by Jonathan – also prepared and maintained at Granby Motorsport in Kilternan, Dublin – from where we will set off to Rosslare Harbour, and on to Goodwood.

The idea to incorporate Our Lady’s Hospice came about when John’s Grandmother was recently taken into Our Lady’s Hospice, Blackrock for palliative care, after the family were finding it increasingly difficult to keep her comfortable at home. The Staff at the Hospice made the transition incredibly easy and showed unconditional compassion. Over the weeks she remained there, John was amazed by the work the nurses and staff performed and how they went above and beyond for their residents.

We all feel the incredible work of Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, Harold’s Cross and Blackrock Hospice over the past 134 years truly deserves the recognition and support of us all!
